- American Idol returned on March 3 for its 17th season.
- Among the talented vocalists, 19-year-old Myra Tran made such a lasting impression on the judges that Luke Bryan likened her to the series’ season, one winner.
Clear your calendars, American Idol devotees, because the beloved singing series is officially back! Season 17 kicked off last night and one performer belted out a tune so beautifully that she earned both a standing ovation and a comparison to the one and only Kelly Clarkson.
Myra Tran, 19, took the season premiere by storm with her cover of Jennifer Hudson’s “One Night Only.” The suit-clad high school student explained to judges Lionel Richie, Katy Perry, and Luke Bryan that she came to the U.S. from Vietnam a year ago and grew up dreaming of “being able to sing in front of the American Idol audience.”
The Vietnamese vocalist certainly did her longtime goal its due justice. Myra dove right into her song with such fierce vigor and power-packed notes that she arguably put the original artist to shame.
After her audition, the astounded judges rose to their feet in congratulatory applause, and Lionel’s reaction is all of us. “Wow! Wow!” he shouted, throwing his arms in the air (same, Lionel, same).
A tearful Myra soaked in the overwhelmingly positive feedback, which continued with Luke voicing perhaps one of the most esteemed American Idolcompliments ever. “You’re up there with the Kelly Clarkson’s of the world,” said the country crooner. “That’s the only way I can say it.”
Lionel, on the other hand, argued that she’s in an unsurpassable league of her own. “There is nothing to compare you to,” he said. “You have stepped into a zone that’s yours and all I want you to do is, from now on, rule your zone. Because you are going places.”
Ding, ding, ding! Could we already have found this season’s winner? Tune in to ABC to find out if she truly does follow in The Voice coach’s footsteps.
